About Estelle
I first came to the north coast 24 years ago and I have lived in the second district for over 23 of those years. For the past 17 and a half years I worked as news director at Redwood Community Radio station, KMUD. Over those years I have developed a clear understanding of the issues that concern the people of the 2nd district and the county as a whole.
I have worked with people of different backgrounds, politics, worldviews and belief systems and earned their trust and respect through hard work, dependability, integrity and honesty and by supporting my community with every possible tool at my command.
I learned my journalistic skills on the job and have earned the respect of my peers throughout community broadcast and other media fields. As a professional who built a successful news department from the ground up, I have helped other radio stations establish their own news departments and led numerous journalism workshops at the national level.
I have been recognized extensively for my coverage and community service during such emergencies as the 1992 Northern California earthquakes, the Canoe/Honeydew/Lightning fires of 2003, numerous weather disasters and other emergencies in Humboldt County.
My in depth and even-handed coverage of forest management policy, local politics and the day-to-day workings, accomplishments and challenges of the county in general have earned the respect of listeners and policy makers alike.
In January 2008 I was elected to the Board of Directors of the Briceland Fire Department.
Before becoming a journalist I worked on both the east and west coasts and in Europe as a graphic and multi-media artist. I received my art education at the Corcoran School of Art in Washington DC and the Brooklyn Museum School of Art and the Cooper Union in NY. I also studied language at the Dante Alighieri Institute in Rome, Italy.
